Trieste is situated on the Adriatic Sea's northern coast in the autonomous Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The city has a long maritime past and has been an international port since its foundation in 1719. Today the port is one of the most modern in Europe. Additionally it is strategically positioned due to its close distance to the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia and Slovenia.

The port provides sufficient facilities and public conveniences. The Stazione Marittima passenger terminal features a departures lounge, coffee shop, lavatories, a convenience store and public telephones.


The terminal is wheelchair-accessible and provides toilets for those with disabilities, while both ferry lines also cater for physicall handicapped travellers. Passengers are strongly advised, however, to notify staff of any special assistance when booking their ferry.

Through history Trieste has been influenced by many different cultures and has known periods of extraordinary wealth. The monuments in the city are popular attractions which easily can be visited when making a city sightseeing tour. Nowadays the city is a cosmopolitan and principal commercial hub.
